Bald Head Island, NC

The pace is mellow, the weather is kind and the living is definitely easy. Wherever you are and wherever you've been, there is no experience that can compare to living at the edge of an ocean.

Just 20 minutes by ferry from the mainland of Southport, North Carolina, sits an island oasis of time and place. Because no cars are permitted on the island-only golf carts, bicycles and your own two feet-you are immediately transitioned into the unhurried pace of slow and carefree island life. More than 10,000 acres of preserved natural wetlands surround the developed island, complete with a 150-slip marina, two artfully appointed beach clubs, an award-winning18-hole golf course, a historic lighthouse and 14 miles of pristine beaches that face east and south. And then there are the homes.

As a predominantly second-home and vacation community, Bald Head Island properties are designed almost exclusively for the enjoyment of life. Each home site sits in one of seven unique habitats that dot the island, which means whatever your pleasure - be it ocean, marsh, golf course, forest or town - there is an environment for you. Spectacular views, breathtaking natural settings and sought-after architects and builders are all par for the course with each property here, and, since almost every home is custom built, character is inherent.

From charming village sidewalks to wooded nature retreats, white, sandy beaches to fertile fishing grounds, the lifestyle on this island leaves nothing to be desired.

As you drive along Bald Head Island's South Beach, the rich golden hue of cedar shakes immediately comes into view. The wide Brazilian walnut steps take you to an inviting covered porch where you can rest and enjoy the permanently unobstructed
view of the famed Captain Charlie's Station and the Shoals. Entering on the sleeping level of this well-designed reverse floor
plan, you'll ascend to the main living area by stairs or elevator, where you'll arrive at an open expanse of living space surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows. At the focal point is an impeccably designed kitchen with custom mahogany cabinets, Miele appliances, exquisite granite counter tops, a wet bar and a wine cooler. Rich materials, colors and textures combine to create an intimate but grand feeling.

When you're ready to retire for the day, four spacious bedroom suites, each with their own bathroom and veranda, occupy the entrance level. At the center hall is a magnificent and richly-paneled study with majestic mahogany built-ins. Beautiful tile and hardwoods can be found throughout, along with custom fixtures, a laundry room and a garage with a tiled floor on the lower level.

A Traditional Beach Cottage on a Grand Scale 970 South Bald Head Wynd Just past a private circular drive off South Bald Head Wynd, tucked away from the road, sits an authentic island retreat, complete with soaring sago palms, spectacular ocean views and a swinging hammock to rock away the summer afternoons. Pickled cypress paneling bathes every wall and puritan pine floors are laid with hand-driven antique-cut nails. Plantation shutters and sunken tubs add character and warmth.

Gracing both levels are entrances to a two-level deck directly facing South Beach and perfectly designed for casual entertaining. On the lower level, each bedroom reflects authentic nautical and island flavor, with warm wood paneling, private baths and openings to the two-story deck.
